Before and After

Do you wash your quilts as soon as they are finished?  I don't; I usually wait until the quilt really needs a wash because I don't want to subject them to unnecessary wear-and-tear in the washing machine.  But I decided to give Jubilee an early wash.

I don't think it is real clear in these photos but washing gave the quilt that crinkly, more textured look.  And it shrunk it by about 4" which is actually a good thing because it better fits our queen size bed now.

  1. I do wash my quilts as soon as they are done. I love the crinkly look! Also, I don't prewash my fabric, so I want to take care of that before I use the quilt. As far as wear and tear goes, I don't mind that so much either. Our old bed quilt, which was only "retired" because we moved from a queen to a king-sized bed was at least 12 years old and had been washed many, many times. The "patina" that those washing gives the quilt makes it seem like a vintage quilt and again, I love that. I did re-do the binding on it, as it started fraying (it was even bias binding.) Your jubilee is so pretty! I really need to make something from my small fig tree collection!

  2. I agree with JoAnne. I love the crinkly look of a washed quilt, and I have found that my quilts have held up to many many washings, and just get softer and lovlier over time.

  4. I don't prewash my fabrics and I don't wash my quilt as soon as it's done. I love the crinkly look but the quilt has lots of time to be crinkly. I am not sure what's right, but that works for me. I sure love your finished quilt Cathy. Thank you for sharing.

  5. Your quilt looks so beautiful washed and on your bed! I love the inviting, cozy look of a quilt after it's been washed.

  6. It depends..I don't wash my commissioned quilts (unless the customer asks for pre-washed) - but my own quilts I do, because I absolutely cannot resist the scent of a line-dried quilt and the lovely, "jump into me" crinkled look they get once they're washed!
